A safe place to heal and rebuild
Long-term change requires a long-term solution & Alpha House provides that solution. Alpha House is dedicated to helping women and children who are committed to leaving an abusive relationship. We provide a comprehensive domestic violence recovery program, consisting of counselling and practical supports, within a protective living environment.
Through counselling, support sessions, workshops and family activities, residents learn healthy coping strategies, rebuild their self-worth and develop practical skills. Most importantly, after completing the program at Alpha House, women can re-enter communities with the skills and confidence necessary to sustain productive, peaceful and healthy lives.
Violence against women happens in all cultures and religions, in all ethnic and racial communities, at every age, and in every income group.
Alpha House was formed in 1989 by a group of women concerned with the lack of support and long term housing for women and their children who were victims of abuse. The women knew that shelters were a short-term solution and that many women traumatized by years of abuse were unable to start a new life because they were not being provided with ongoing support. Alpha House Project was founded to fulfill this need.
Through their fundraising efforts over the next five years, Alpha House formally opened its doors to the first family in 1994. Since that time over 324 families in need have turned to Alpha House to move their lives in a new direction and ultimately live life empowered.
